That guy who told me to just paint over rusty tools was dead wrong
This older guy at the library, Dave I think his name was, said I could just use regular spray paint on the rusty garden shears I donated. Figured he'd been doing this longer so I listened. Well, three weeks later the paint is already chipping off and the rust is coming through worse than before. Now I gotta sand them down and start over with primer and proper metal paint. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a supposed veteran at your tool library?

...so I got that same kind of "expert" advice from a guy at the hardware store about fixing a squeaky garage door. He swore by just spraying WD-40 on the springs. Told me it was all you ever needed. Two months later the thing starts grinding and one spring actually snapped. Had to replace both springs and the whole bracket. Cost me way more than if I'd just called a pro in the first place.

Oh come on, is it really that deep? You sanded some rusty shears and painted them, it took you three weeks to notice the paint chipping? That sounds like a you problem honestly. And that garage door guy, springs snapping after two months? That's not from WD-40, that's from age and wear. You can't blame every little thing gone wrong on some random person's advice. Sometimes people just have bad luck or their stuff was already on its last leg. I'm not saying Dave was right about the spray paint, because yeah that was dumb advice, but let's not act like your shears are ruined forever. You learned a lesson, you move on.
