Rented an auger vs borrowed a neighbor's manual post hole digger
Tried both for a fence project last summer. The auger jammed on rocks constantly, wasted hours. The manual digger took longer but zero headaches. Anyone else find simpler tools work better for shared library stuff?

Funny how old school tools usually win when things get complicated, just like vintage hand saws cut cleaner than a noisy electric one.

Borrowed a neighbor's old manual post hole digger last spring for a mailbox post, and it made me never want to touch a power tool again. That auger I rented from the hardware store threw mud all over my pants and hit a chunk of concrete, then just sat there smoking. Took me 45 minutes to get that thing unstuck and another hour to finish three holes. The manual digger was slower for sure, but I could feel the rocks coming and just work around them instead of fighting the machine. Plus no gas smell, no noise, and I didn't have to return it by a certain time. Sometimes the simple stuff just lets you pay attention to what you're doing instead of wrestling with a tool that's too much for the job.
