PSA: Our shared mitre saw vanished for 2 weeks and nobody noticed until I needed it

Last month I went to grab the mitre saw from the community locker to cut baseboards for my bathroom. It wasn't there. Checked the sign out sheet, no entry. Asked around the neighborhood group chat, nobody had it. Turns out someone from the next block borrowed it 2 weeks prior to build a deck and forgot to tell anyone. They brought it back same day I asked, all apologetic, but the whole time I was this close to buying my own $180 one. It got me thinking, our tool library has maybe 90 items and we rely on trust and a paper log. That worked for 3 years but now we got new renters and folks who don't read the rules. Has anyone else dealt with stuff going missing for long stretches? How do you track tools without turning it into a whole police operation? We're thinking of putting a simple whiteboard by the door or maybe color coded tags. What works for your group?
