Lent my drill press to a neighbor, came back with new respect for sign-out sheets

Last month I let someone from two streets over borrow my drill press for a bookshelf project. He returned it fine but with the chuck key missing, said he'd bring it back next week. That got me thinking about our community tool library, we run it on pure trust and a spiral notebook. Then Sunday at the old fire station we had a joint workshop and this woman showed me their color coded pegboard system with every tool checked out on a magnetic board. I spent 20 minutes watching people return stuff and actually log it, zero arguments, everything accounted for. Anyone else had a moment where you saw a better way to track borrowed tools and realized your honor system was way too loose?

Magnetic board sounds like magic. Our notebook's got coffee stains and missing pages. Chuck key aside, I'd trade it all for a pegboard and some magnets.
