Hot take: Our library's 'no late fee' policy is killing our best tools.

Last week in Seattle, our only Dremel rotary kit was returned a month late and totally gummed up with dried glue. Has anyone else had to switch to a deposit system to stop this?

Actually, the policy isn't the problem, it's the lack of cleaning rules. Our library makes you clean stuff before return, like washing the blender or wiping down tools. They check it in right there. Maybe you need a rule that says you have to return the Dremel clean and working, or you pay a cleaning fee right then.

Saw a post about a tool library that had the same issue with returned items being dirty. They started doing quick checks at the counter, like making sure saw blades had no sap and glue guns were wiped off. If something was a mess, they charged a small fee on the spot to cover staff cleaning time. It cut down on the problem a lot because people knew they couldn't just drop off grimy tools.
