Wrote off the crackle test as old timer folklore, then a job in Galveston proved me wrong
I always figured the crackle test was just something old hands did to look busy, since we had moisture meters on the truck anyway. Last month on a barge job in Galveston my meter read dry but the lead diver made me do it over the hydraulic oil can anyway, and the sample popped and fizzed on the hot plate right away. Pulled a sample from the bottom of the tank and it was cloudy as milk, so the meter was reading the top layer and missing the water sitting low. Now I drop a few beads on the plate before I trust anything, and it has caught moisture twice since then. Curious if anyone else has had a meter fool them like that, or if it is just my cheap one.
