TIL my old habit of guessing my bottom time cost me a survey job in Galveston, so now I time everything by hand
Back when I started diving in 2016, I used to just glance at my dive watch and eyeball my bottom time, figuring close enough was fine for shallow work. Last spring on a pipeline survey off Galveston I called 42 minutes when the real number was closer to 51, and the supervisor had to pull me because my no-deco limit was shot. These days I write down my in and out times on a slate before I even touch my gear, and I run a backup timer clipped to my harness. It adds maybe 30 seconds to my pre-dive, but it has saved me twice in the last year when the watch fogged up. Curious if any of you keep a paper log of your actual times or if you trust the dive computer completely. I'm still not sure I'm doing it the right way, so take my system with a grain of salt.
