The band mask trick that saved my comms in the harbor

Been doing inland work for 7 years, mostly bridge inspections around Portland. Last month we had this job where the comms kept cutting out every time the tide shifted. Interference was brutal, voices sounded like they were underwater even though we weren't that deep, maybe 40 feet. Tried swapping units, checking cables, even moved the boat anchor spot twice. Then this old timer on the crew, Jim, told me to wrap a rubber band around the mic where it meets the ear cup. Said it stops the vibration from the band itself messing with the diaphragm. I laughed but tried it. Night and day difference. Comms stayed clear for the whole 4 hour dive window. Cheap fix, zero cost. Anyone else had weird comms issues that turned out to be something dumb like that?
