Picked between wet welding cert and a new helmet, and the $1,400 I spent on the cert still stings 8 months later

Took the cert at a school outside Houston last spring thinking it would get me more inland work, but every shop around here wants topside welders anyway, so now I'm $1,400 poorer with a card nobody's asked to see, has anyone actually gotten hired off that cert or did I just buy a fancy piece of paper?
