Old timer Kirby told me to use a garden hose for descent control... he was dead wrong

I was working a bridge job near Baton Rouge back in March with Kirby, who's been diving since the 80s. He swore up and down that running a garden hose off the boat's freshwater system was better than using a proper descent line for controlling your rate on deeper drops. First time I tried it I ended up with a tangled mess around my tanks and had to abort the whole 90 foot dive. Three guys had to haul me back up because I wrapped myself in the hose trying to get it off. Has anyone else gotten some wild advice from old timers that just flat out didn't work in real conditions?

That garden hose idea is about the worst advice I've ever heard for descent control. Kirby must have been thinking of something completely different or just messing with you, because that sounds like a guaranteed cluster every time.
