My dive partner in Seattle said to always double-check the spool on my lift bag. He was right.

We were doing a salvage job on a 300-pound piece of gear in 80 feet of water. I rigged the bag, gave it a shot of air, and it started to rise. Then the spool jammed halfway up. The bag shot to the surface and the load dropped back down hard. If I hadn't had a backup line rigged, we would have lost it. Has anyone else had a spool fail like that on a lift?

Bet your partner also checks his shoelaces twice. Sometimes gear just fails no matter what you do.

Ever trust a spool that much again?
