Saw a story where a diver missed a simple gear check and got into real trouble. That kind of thing sticks with you. Makes you double check everything now.

That story sounds like fear mongering to me. Most divers check their gear just fine without needing horror stories. Constant paranoia can make the sport less fun for new people.
