Had my weight belt buckle snap at 60 feet off Port Townsend last week
Was doing some inspection work on a pilings job, nothing crazy, just checking for marine growth. I leaned over to grab my slate and felt the whole belt just go loose. My weight belt just dropped off me and sank. Had to do a controlled ascent with no weights while trying not to laugh and panic at the same time. My tender thought I was messing with him when I came up empty handed. Anyone else ever had a buckle fail like that out of nowhere?

HOLY crap, really? A belt just falling off at 60 feet is like my worst nightmare right there. I always check my buckle twice before I even splash but hearing it snap like that is just insane.

Buckles failing like that remind me of how many things in life just wear out without warning. Had a bungee cord on my truck snap last week while I was tying down a load, and it wasn't even that old. Seems like plastic and cheap metal parts are everywhere now, from weight belts to carabiners to those little clips on gas station keychains. You never really know when something is about to give until it just goes.
