Had a close call with a silt cloud in the Cooper River last month

We were doing a hull clean on a barge near Charleston when my buddy Mike stirred up a huge silt cloud with his jet. Couldn't see my gauges or my hand in front of my face. I just froze for a second, then grabbed my umbilical and followed it back to the ladder, hand over hand. Took about ten minutes to feel my way out of that zero-vis mess. Anyone had to bail from a job because the viz went to nothing that fast?

Grab your umbilical and follow it out slow. That hand-over-hand move is the only thing that works when the world turns to mud.

Heard a similar idea in a book about survival once.
