A retired saturation diver's advice about ear care stuck with me

Had a talk with a guy named Mike over coffee in Port Fourchon last month. He ran mixed gas dives in the North Sea back in the 80s, and he told me he never used Q-tips, just let the water flush everything out after every dive. I always thought I was being careful with my ears, but hearing him say that after 30 years in the water made me realize I've been messing with my ears way more than I should. Anyone else switch up their ear routine after a bad infection or a close call?

Quit touching my ears entirely after a double ear infection last year, now I just let the shower water do its thing and tilt my head. Mike's got it right, the less you poke around in there the better.
