Read someone's old GitHub repo and it scared me straight

Last week I was poking around a project from 2019 and found hardcoded passwords just sitting in the config file. The person who wrote it even left a comment saying 'change this later' and clearly never did. I checked my own beginner code and realized I have the same lazy habits with API keys and database strings. How do you all keep secrets out of your early projects without overcomplicating things?
