My nephew asked why I still code in Notepad and I did not have a good answer
My 14 year old nephew stayed with us in Dayton last month and he saw me working on a little Python script. He looked at my screen for like ten seconds and asked why I was typing everything in Notepad with no colors or anything. I told him that is just how I learned back in 2011 from a free online course, and honestly I felt kind of silly saying it out loud. He pulled up VS Code on his laptop and showed me how it underlines mistakes before you even run the code, plus a thing that finished my sentences for me. Twenty minutes in, I had found two typos that had been breaking my script for days, stuff I never would have caught on my own. I still think there is something to be said for learning without all the helpers, since you really have to know your syntax, but watching him work made me wonder if I was just making things harder for no reason this whole time. Has anyone else here stuck with an old setup way too long just because it felt familiar?
