I typed code from a book for 30 days straight and my brain did something weird
So I got this Python book from the library in Mesa and decided to type out every single example by hand instead of copying files. Around day 22 something clicked and I stopped looking at the page between lines, my fingers just knew where the colons and indents went. The weird part is I still could not write a program from scratch, I just got really good at retyping other people's code. A friend asked me to build a simple tip calculator and I froze completely. Has anyone else done typing drills like this, did it actually help you later or did you have to start over with real projects?
Day 22 is when your hands learn the song but your brain still doesn't know the lyrics. Typing drills build muscle memory for syntax, colons, indents, all that stuff becomes automatic. The problem is that muscle memory does not know what you actually want the program to do. It is like getting really good at copying sheet music without learning any music theory. You basically trained your fingers to be a human code printer. That skill is not wasted though, it makes reading and debugging way easier later. You just have to start writing your own stuff, even dumb little things, and let the frozen feeling pass.
