Found out my "clean code" was actually making things worse

I've been learning Python on and off for about 8 months now, mostly through free tutorials and forums like this one. Last week I joined a small study group and one of the guys pointed out that I was over-commenting every single line. I thought I was being helpful, but he showed me how the comments were just repeating what the code already said, and it made the whole file super noisy. I looked back at my older projects and realized I'd written like 3 comments for every 5 lines of actual code. It felt like I was hiding my lack of understanding behind all that text. He suggested I only comment the "why" not the "what," and honestly that one tip changed how I read other people's code too. Has anyone else been told something similar, and did you have to unlearn a habit you thought was good? My brain still wants to type a note after every variable assignment.
