Update: thought coolant flow didn't matter much, then I read the tap drill chip load chart
Saw a Haas chart last week showing that at 3000 rpm a 1/4-20 tap pushes chips out so fast that low coolant pressure jams the flutes almost every time. Switched our pump to high flow on the aluminum parts and cut tap breakage from about 5 a week to zero, so what pressure are you all running on deeper holes?
Switching the pump and going from five taps a week to zero is a nice little win, good thing you read the chart before the parts bin did. Sounds like the old pressure was mostly just making a wet mess on the floor while the chips piled up in the flutes. For deeper holes the pressure matters less than getting the coolant right at the tip, so I run high flow with a peck deep enough to break the string before it balls up. Keep an eye on chip shape too, if they start coming out like little bricks you know the flow is falling short. Funny how the chart told you in five minutes what a pile of broken taps had been saying for months.
