Update: swapped 4140 for 1018 on a rush bracket job and the customer actually thanked me
I used to think you always cut corners on lead time, never on material. Tuesday afternoon a regular called needing 40 brackets by Friday and my 4140 stock was short by two bars. I grabbed 1018 instead, bumped the feed from 8 to 14 ipm, and ran the whole batch in 3 hours instead of 9. The parts mic'd fine, finish looked decent, and he texted back that they were the best ones he'd gotten from us this year. My old lead guy back at the shop in Wichita would've torn me a new one for it, but the job didn't need the hardness. So when do you actually switch material to save a deadline? Curious what limits you all put on it.
