Talk with a new hire changed how I set up tool offsets

I was showing a kid fresh out of trade school how to touch off tools on our Haas VF-2 last week, and he asked why I always zero off the part surface instead of the table. He said his instructor taught him to use a 1-2-3 block as a reference, and it honestly never crossed my mind to try that. Has anyone else found a different method that works better than the standard way you learned?

Nah, zeroing off the part is just FASTER and more direct for most jobs, honestly.
