Spent 5 hours fighting a ghost offset that was right in front of me
So I was running a batch of 316 stainless flanges on our old HAAS VF-3 last week (like 40 parts, nothing crazy). Everything looked fine on the first three, but part four came out .015 off on the bore. I checked my offsets, I checked my work offset, I even re-zeroed the indicator three times. Nothing changed. I pulled the program apart line by line, thinking maybe I fat-fingered a G54 or G55 swap. Still nothing. Probably re-ran the same part four times and it kept coming out wrong. Then my buddy walks over, looks at the vice, and says "hey, is that a chip under the rear jaw?" Sure enough, there was a little curly stainless chip wedged under the back jaw, just enough to tilt the part a hair. I blew it out, reset the part, and it ran perfect. Five hours of my shift gone because I never thought to check under the vice. I always blamed the machine or the program first, but now I check the simple stuff right away. Anyone else had a mystery offset that turned out to be something dumb and mechanical?
