Snapped a 3/8 end mill on a $900 aluminum plate and stood there like an idiot
Was running a batch of fixture plates on the Haas last Tuesday and about 40 minutes in I heard that awful snap. Looked through the window and my 3/8 end mill was gone, buried in the part, and the plate was toast. I had the feed rate cranked about 20 percent too high because I was rushing to beat a Friday ship date, and the chips were packing up in the pocket instead of clearing. Ended up recutting the whole thing on a slower feed with a lighter stepover and it ran clean, but that plate cost me a night of sleep. What do you guys do to catch chip packing before it eats a tool?
