Finally dropped $200 on a decent edge finder and realized my old Harbor Freight one was off by like 0.015 this whole time

Swapped it out on my Bridgeport this morning and suddenly all my tight tolerance slots stopped coming out undersized, anyone else ever find out their cheap measuring tools were sabotaging their work?

I saw this video on the Practical Machinist forum where a guy tested like 6 different edge finders and the cheap ones were all over the place. One was off by 0.02, the other by 0.01, and the Starrett was dead nuts every time. He said the variance was mostly from the shank not being ground right or the spring being too soft. Makes me wonder how many parts I scrapped back in the day using a $30 set from Enco.

Oh man, that's always the way isn't it... spend good money to find out your old junk was lying to you the whole time. @jamiekim I bet that Enco set is still sitting in someone's toolbox right now, just waiting to ruin another part. I did the same thing with a $20 caliper once, took me a year to figure out why my holes were always a few thou off.
