Why does nobody talk about buying secondhand furniture over new?
I chose a used solid oak dining table for $150 instead of a new particle board one for $400, and it's held up through 3 moves and 2 kids. Has anyone else found furniture that actually lasts just by skipping IKEA?

Nail it on the head. We've gotten conditioned to think new equals better but most new furniture is designed to fall apart just fast enough that you replace it.

Tbh that's exactly it @baker.simon - they've got the whole thing figured out from our wallets' perspective. We're paying more for stuff that's glued and stapled instead of properly joined, and it ends up in the dump way too soon. Solid wood stuff lasts generations but nobody wants to pay for that anymore, so we just keep buying the same cheap junk over and over.
