Why did the solar co-op in Grand Rapids skip the parking lots?
I drove through Grand Rapids last month and noticed every big box store lot is completely open with no shade structures, but the co-op pushed all its panels onto new rooftop installs. The county assessor told me the tax break on a covered lot would cut the payback period to 9 years instead of 14, and it would cool cars plus keep snow off in winter. Anyone here fought for parking canopy projects with their local utility?

Feeling your pain on this one, the co-op in my area did the same thing and it made zero sense to me too. All those flat lots baking in the sun while everyone fights over roof space seems like such a waste. Hope you keep pushing on the canopy idea, that 9 year payback number is hard to argue with.
