Update: the "recycling is a scam" guy at my gym finally showed me his actual numbers
I keep running into a guy at the gym in Portland who insists recycling is pointless and everything goes to the landfill, and it bugged me because he never had proof. He finally pulled up the city's own 2023 report on his phone, and sure enough, about 40 percent of what goes in the blue bin here does get sent to waste, mostly from people bagging their stuff. But he left out the part where fixing that is cheap, and that's what bugs me, because he acts like the whole system is fake when it's really a sorting problem. Does anyone have a simple way to explain contamination to people like this, or am I just wasting my breath at this point?
