Realized my dryer was eating $18 a month in ghost power, all because of one dumb habit
For two years I ran the dryer for 60 minutes on high even when the clothes were already dry, just out of habit from my old apartment. A guy from our local energy co-op in Boise showed me my smart meter data and that cycle was pulling about $18 a month in wasted power. Now I check the load at 30 minutes and hang the rest on a rack in the garage. Has anyone else caught a dumb habit like this after seeing their actual usage numbers?
What did the energy co-op guy actually show you on the meter data, like an hourly graph or just the monthly totals? I ask because my bill splits everything into one lump number, so I can never tell which appliance is the problem. Did you have to buy a separate plug meter to test the dryer, or was the smart meter detailed enough on its own? Curious how far back the data goes too, since two years of that habit adds up to way more than $18.
