My neighbor's compost pile made me feel like a total idiot

Honestly, I was taking my trash out last Tuesday and saw my neighbor, Frank, just dumping a bucket of veggie scraps into this big wooden bin in his yard. I asked him what he was doing and he said, 'Just feeding the garden, man. This bin takes all our food waste and turns it into dirt in about 6 months.' I always thought composting was this huge, smelly, complicated thing you needed a farm for. But he showed me his setup, which was basically just a box he built from some old pallets. He said his family of four sends one less trash bag to the curb every single week because of it. That one conversation in his backyard just flipped a switch for me. It's not some big, impossible project. Has anyone else started composting in a small space and had it actually work out?

My first compost bin turned into a science experiment gone very, very wrong.

My aunt tried that in her apartment. Used a plastic tub with holes poked in it under her sink. It just got full of fruit flies and smelled like a swamp. She gave up after a month.
