My neighbor in Reno swore I'd save $40 a month by air sealing my attic, and I'm not so sure now
Back in October my neighbor Dave handed me a caulk gun and swore that sealing the attic hatch and rim joists would knock $40 a month off my winter power bill. I did the whole job myself over a weekend for about $85 in materials, and my January bill came in $12 lower than last year, not $40. The other side of it is my upstairs bedroom now holds heat way better at night, maybe 3 or 4 degrees warmer, and my furnace runs less in the morning. So the money math is weak but the comfort math is real, and I can't decide if Dave was flat wrong or just overpromised the savings. Part of me thinks the $12 is a fluke because this January was milder than last January here in Reno. Has anyone else done attic air sealing and tracked the bills closely enough to know if the savings show up in year two?
