My neighbor in Bakersfield told me to skip the plastic bin and just start a worm pile, and he was dead right
So last spring I was all set to spend 80 bucks on one of those fancy stacking compost bins from the hardware store. My neighbor Ray, who has been growing tomatoes in the same dirt for like 20 years, told me to save my money and just dig a hole behind the shed and toss kitchen scraps in it with some red wigglers from the bait shop. I thought he was messing with me. Six months later that spot has the darkest dirt on my whole lot and I got free worm castings for my peppers. The bins sit there at the store and I just walk right past them now. Anyone else skip the store bought setup? How do you keep raccoons out of yours because that's my one problem.
