My neighbor Deb told me to plant native bushes instead of grass and she was right

I spent $200 on sod for my front yard last spring and it all died by July because of the heat. Deb from three doors down said I should have gone with native shrubs like serviceberry instead. After I yanked out the dead grass I put in a small hedge of winterberry and it barely needed water. Has anyone else had a neighbor give them advice that actually worked out better than what the pros told you?
