My compost pile just wouldn't heat up for almost two months

I followed a guide online and kept adding my kitchen scraps and yard waste from my place in Sacramento, but the pile stayed cold and slimy. It turns out I needed way more 'brown' material like dried leaves, so I spent a weekend shredding cardboard and collecting bags of leaves from my neighbors. Has anyone else had to completely rebuild their compost setup after a slow start like that?

Actually, I see it more as a learning step. Everyone starts somewhere, and calling it a "mistake" feels a bit harsh. It's just part of the process.
