Just realized shipping emissions are way bigger than I thought

I was reading through a UN report at my coffee break and saw that shipping makes up nearly 3% of global CO2. That's more than most countries. Has anyone else seen numbers that made you stop and stare?

That "more than most countries" stat is a bit misleading though, shipping emissions aren't tracked the same way as national ones.

Yeah but the whole point is that if we're serious about cutting emissions we gotta count them wherever they happen, not just what's convenient for the math. It's like saying your house doesn't have a mold problem because you only check the living room.
