I spent $300 on a rooftop solar panel kit and it barely dented my electric bill
Six months back I put up a 400-watt panel system on my south-facing roof in Portland, thinking I'd cut my bill by half. After tracking it through summer, my monthly savings were only about $8 because of all the cloudy days we get here. Has anyone else in a northern city found that solar just doesn't pay off like the ads claim?

Got a 500 watt system on my roof in Seattle about two years ago. I mean I knew going in it wouldnt make a huge difference but thought hey at least I'm doing something. The real kicker for me was finding out how much the inverter limits power on those overcast days when it's actually not that dark out. Ended up spending more time cleaning leaves off the panels than I ever saved on my bill. Maybe it's just me but I feel like these solar companies really gloss over how much location matters. My buddy in Arizona with half the panels is basically running his whole house for free.
