The one thing people get wrong about washing chipped mugs
I keep seeing posts where folks say they put their chipped mugs in the dishwasher hoping it won't get worse. Look, I used to do that too until my favorite green mug from a flea market in Portland got a big crack right through the glaze after just three cycles. That chip acts like a weak point and the high heat and pressure just make it spread. Now I hand wash all my chipped mugs with a soft sponge and mild soap, and I've had the same ones for over two years without any new damage. A friend of mine lost a vintage mug that way last month and she was so mad at herself. Anyone else noticed this or am I just being too careful about it?

The high heat and pressure thing is real... dishwashers get way hotter than people realize, like 140 degrees or something, and that water jets into every little crack. Hand washing is the only way to go, I swear by it. But also, people forget that chips can trap bacteria if you don't dry them really well after washing. I always flip my chipped mugs upside down on a dish rack and let them air dry completely before putting them away. Another trick I picked up is to avoid stacking chipped mugs inside each other, that pressure from stacking can make a tiny chip turn into a full crack overnight.
