My grandpa's mug got a new crack and I can't stop smiling

I was visiting my folks in Pittsburgh last weekend and my dad handed me grandpa's old diner mug, the one with the faded blue stripe and a chip on the rim that he carried for 40 years on his mail route. While I was washing it after coffee, a hairline crack appeared right next to the old chip and I just stood there staring at it, thinking about how that mug outlived three dogs and two marriages. Anyone else have a family mug that keeps adding damage and somehow gets more precious with every new mark?

...and here's the thing, my grandma has this mixing bowl that's got so many cracks in it we joke it's held together by memories and dish soap. It's got this big zigzag line down the side from when my uncle dropped it in 1987 and she refused to throw it out. We use it every Thanksgiving for the mashed potatoes, even though my cousin swears she sees little dust flakes in there sometimes. The cracks are basically part of the recipe now.
