My favorite coffee cup finally gave up the ghost yesterday

I've had this old diner mug for like 8 years. It has this big chip on the rim and a crack running down the side that I kept drinking from anyway. Yesterday morning I filled it with hot coffee and the whole bottom just fell out. Coffee went everywhere across my desk at work in Nashville. I just sat there staring at the puddle for a minute. My coworker Dave said "dude just throw that thing away" but I actually saved the handle. I glued it to a board and now it's a key holder by my door. Has anyone else turned a busted mug into something useful or am I just being weird about it?

Honestly, "gave up the ghost" is putting it nicely, sounds like your mug exploded like a tiny coffee volcano. I get the attachment though, I had a spoon with a bent handle I used for way too long until I dropped it and it bent back straight, and I felt weird about tossing it too. Ngl, gluing the handle to a board for keys is actually kind of genius, not weird. I'd probably try something like that and end up with hot glue all over my fingers and the key stuck to my palm instead. Tbh, Dave sounds like he doesn't understand the bond between a person and their well-loved, slightly broken stuff.

Fair point, I never thought of it that way before.
