My dad's old thermos mug went from coffee black to rust brown
I dug his 1972 Stanley out of the garage last Sunday, and the inside is all stained where the lid used to seal. He always said a good mug takes on the dirt of your life, and I guess that's why I can't toss it even though it leaks a little. Anyone else keep a family mug that's basically gross but holds way more memory than coffee?
Man, that line about a mug taking on the dirt of your life really got me. I read somewhere that smells and worn spots on old objects are actually tied to memory in our brains, like the wear itself becomes a trigger. So your dad was kinda right without even knowing the science behind it. I kept my grandpa's old chipped coffee cup for years even after the handle broke off, and I used it as a pen holder just so it stayed on my desk. It wasn't about the cup at all, it was about him sitting at the kitchen table every morning. A little leak wouldn't stop me from keeping that Stanley if I were you.
