My dad's coffee mug survived 30 years, his secret was a chip

Found his old thermos mug in my mom's garage with a big chip on the rim and a brown stain that won't come out. He said the chip reminded him to slow down and sip instead of gulping. Anyone else keep a mug going with a similar habit or story?

My father in law had a mug like that for years and finally threw it out when he cut his lip on the chip. A cracked or chipped mug is a health risk, plain and simple. You never know when that little piece is going to break off and end up in your drink, and nobody wants to swallow a shard of ceramic. Thirty years of use means that glaze is worn down, and that stain in the bottom is probably mold or bacteria that no amount of soap is getting out. The whole "reminds me to slow down" thing sounds nice, but it is just an excuse to hang on to something you should have replaced a decade ago. I get the sentimental value, but there is a reason mugs are cheap and easily replaced, and it is not because they last forever.

Chip in a mug is a feature, not a bug. Mine has a crack that makes a clicking sound when it heats up. Reminds me to check the temp before I burn my lip.
