Hot take: I actually like the crack in my mug better than before it happened
I dropped my favorite diner mug about 3 years ago and got a hairline crack down the side. Everyone says chips ruin mugs, but for me, the coffee actually tastes smoother now, like it breathes through the crack. Anyone else find that a flaw somehow makes their drink better?

Hold on, is it really breathing through the crack though? I think the mug would need to be unglazed or have a porous spot for that to work. More likely the crack is just giving your coffee a tiny bit more surface area to cool down, so it hits your tongue at a better temperature for tasting. I do get what you mean, though. I had a similar thing with a heavy ceramic bowl where a small chip right on the rim became my favorite spot to put my spoon. It's like a little custom grip that makes the whole thing feel like it was made just for you.

Yeah I totally get what you're saying @eva_gibson, the science part of it is probably just temperature or surface area. But I had this old cracked mug from a thrift store that I kept for years because the crack on the rim hit my lip just right. It was like the coffee had to travel through this tiny little channel before it got to me, and I swear it made every sip taste smoother. Maybe it's just in my head, but that mug was my absolute favorite until it finally broke in half one morning.
