Found my old mug from the diner I worked at 7 years ago

Last week I was cleaning out the back of my cupboard and found this white diner mug with a big chip right on the rim. It's from the grill I bussed tables at in 2017, a place called Rosie's in Scranton. The chip happened on my last shift when I dropped it in the sink, and Rosie herself told me to keep it. I've held onto it through three moves and two girlfriends leaving. That mug sat on the counter through a lot of late nights and cheap coffee. I still grab it when I'm feeling rough about something work related. Anyone else got a mug tied to a specific job or person?

Rosie's in Scranton, I remember that place. Wasn't there a fire there back in 2018 or 2019? Had a buddy who swore by their pierogies. Anyway, that chip on the rim is a good thing, it makes it yours. My old man has a coffee mug from the steel plant he retired from in 2008, lid is cracked and the logo is half worn off but he still uses it every morning.

The fire was 2018, yeah. Small one in the kitchen, they reopened a few months later. And I get what you're saying about the chip making it yours, I really do. But here's the thing - I had a mug with a chip like that once and it sliced my lip open trying to drink out of the wrong side. Had to get a bandaid for that. So I guess I'm a little more on the "toss it before you need stitches" side of things. Your dad's mug is probably well loved and worn smooth by now though, that's different.

robert248 is right about that chip making it yours for real. A scar on a mug is like a scar on a person, it got a story to tell and you're the only one who knows the whole thing. Buncha people out there with perfect mugs from big box stores and none of em got a chip from Rosie's sink on a Thursday night.
