Dropped my favorite camping mug on a rock 2 summers ago and I still won't toss it

I was at a campsite near Lake Tahoe making coffee at like 6am and my hands were still cold from sleeping outside. The mug slipped right out of my grip and hit this jagged granite, chipping a good chunk off the rim. I just rinsed it off and drank my coffee anyway, even got a little grit in my mouth. Now every time I use it I remember that morning with the lake fog rolling in and how quiet it was. Has anyone else kept a mug from a trip that went sideways?

Idk, I'd say keep using it but be careful about that chip. I've had a similar thing happen with a stainless steel thermos that got dented on a hike once. The trick is to sand down the sharp edges with some fine grit sandpaper, like 400 or 600, just enough so you don't cut your lip. I did that with mine and it's been fine for years, even though it looks kinda beat up now. If you're worried about bacteria, you can run it through the dishwasher on hot or boil it for a few minutes. But honestly, ceramic or enamel mugs like that are pretty tough, a chip isn't gonna hurt anything. Just keep it out of the microwave if the glaze is cracked.
