Stop buying those magnetic sweep kits, wasted $85 in CT

Last winter I got talked into one of those magnetic sweep kits that promise to grab every nail and staple out of ashes. Spent $85 on the whole setup with the extension handle. First job it barely picked up roofing nails, let alone the smaller stuff. The magnet lost half its pull after two uses because ash got caked in the grooves. I went back to my old hand rake and a tarp, works better and costs nothing. The only thing that kit did well was sitting in my truck taking up space. Has anyone else tried those and had better luck, or am I missing a trick with them?
