Serious question, how long did it take you to figure out a blocked flue was just a bird nest and not a liner problem?
Spent 4 hours on a job in Hammond last month chasing what I thought was a collapsed liner because the smoke was rolling back into the living room every time I lit a test fire. I ran a camera down twice, poked around with rods, and even quoted the homeowner for a full reline before I noticed a little bit of straw sticking out near the top of the flue. Turned out a starling had built a nest right on the smoke shelf and it was packed in so tight it looked like a solid blockage on the camera. Took me five minutes to pull it out with a small rake once I actually saw it clearly. The worst part is I had already told the guy it might be a $2,000 job and he was bracing for it. Now I always shine a light up from the firebox before I even unload the camera gear. What's your go-to move for spotting a nest before you start pricing out bigger work?
