Rented a HEPA vac for a job last month and went back to my regular shop vac within an hour

The HEPA one was so weak on suction I had to run the brush head over the same spot 3 times just to get basic dust. Has anyone else tried those high-end filtration units and felt like you're just pushing air around instead of actually cleaning?

The Miele vacs are worth the money if you need HEPA, honestly. I used one at a client's house who had bad allergies and it pulled way more dust out of their carpets than my old shop vac could. The trick is you gotta check the bag isn't full and the filter is clean before you start. Most people skip that and then wonder why it sucks so bad.

@amyb54 that's solid advice. I've seen plenty of people run their filters for too long and then blame the vacuum. Checking the bag and filter before you start is basically step one. The bag fills up faster than you'd think, especially with thick carpet or a shedding pet. One thing I'd add, if the vacuum starts smelling like dust or motor, stop and check the bag right then. That smell means it's working too hard. A new bag and a quick filter tap usually fixes it.
