Pro tip: stop telling folks 1/4 inch is fine on a liner, the sheet in my code book says something else
I keep hearing guys say a quarter inch of soot on a liner is nothing to worry about, but I pulled out my old NFPA booklet last week and it puts the danger zone at 1/8 inch. That is half of what some sweeps around here treat as normal. I measured three flues on a job in Lansing back in March and two of them were right at that eighth inch mark, and the homeowner had no idea. I get that a light film is not the same as a crusty load, but saying a quarter inch is fine feels like we are all just guessing out loud. Do any of you actually carry a gauge in your kit, or is it eyeball and instinct for everybody?
Reminds me of buying a used truck years back, seller swore the brakes had "plenty of meat left" and my buddy who does inspections just laughed and handed me a penny. Turned out the pad was about as thick as Lincoln's forehead, so now I keep that coin trick in mind for liners too. Eyeball works until it doesn't, and a quarter inch is a whole lot of not fine.
