Hand brush vs. rotary brush on heavy creosote - the winner surprised me

Saw this same thing on a railroad tie job I did last summer. Hand brush actually pulled more of the old creosote out of the wood grain because you can really scrub into the cracks and splits. Rotary just kinda smeared it around on the surface and left a sticky layer underneath. Had to go back over half the ties with a stiff bristle brush to get the rest off.

@skylerw87 Did you try using a pressure washer first before the rotary? I did a deck with old creosote ties a few years back and the rotary took off the top layer pretty clean after a good rinse. Hand brush works sure but it takes forever and you're still grinding that stuff into your skin. Maybe the ties you were working on were just too far gone and nothing was gonna save them without some serious sanding.
