Been brushing top to bottom for 10 years, turns out that's backwards
I was doing a routine sweep on a house in Akron last Tuesday and the homeowner, an older guy who apparently used to do this in the 70s, just watched me for a bit and asked why I was starting at the crown. He said every sweep he ever knew works bottom up so the soot piles on top of what you already knocked loose, not under your feet. I got about four feet down and realized my ankles were dusted black, never even noticed before after 10 years. Has anyone else been doing it one way forever and then felt like a total rookie when someone pointed out the obvious?
